During a long and distinguished army career, Lt-Gen Jonathon Riley, commanded British peacekeeping forces in Bosnia, Sierra Leone, Iraq and served for two years from 2007 as the Deputy Commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. He was also Deputy Commanding General, Coalition Military Advisory and Training Team Iraq, 2003–2004; Commanding General, Multi-national Division (South-East) and General Officer Commanding British Forces Iraq, 2004–2005 and worked for the Royal Jordanian Court

Lieutenant-General Jonathon Riley (former Commanding Officer of 1st Royal Welch Fusiliers), is a military historian and visiting lecturer at Birmingham University and King's College London, Department of War Studies. Guest speaker, author and lecturer on Military and Defence Security around the globe. He was also Chairman of Trustees of the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum Trust for 20 years.

He has written 25 books to date and co-authored many more.
